Christ Church Cambridge
Settled early in colonial times, not long after the first English families expanded up from Jamestown, Virginia, its first inhabitants found promise on the banks of the Choptank River. Until the 1936 construction of the Choptank River Bridge, and later in 1952, the Bay Bridge crossing over from Annapolis, Cambridge and much of the Eastern Shore was both blessed and challenged by its isolation.
Today's Cambridge is a changing panorama. The Hyatt Chesapeake Resort Hotel, which opened in 2002, and is now a major employer, dominates the waterfront to the east of town. The town center is growing with multi-story condominiums and a marina full of beautiful yachts.
Cambridge is the county seat of Dorchester County and marks the beginning of the low-lying delta making up much of the Delmarva Peninsula. The southern half of the county is crisscrossed by meandering tidal creeks and marsh grasses and is home to a wonderful variety of wildlife.
Surrounded by water on all sides, the peninsula provides sailors, powerboat racers, kyakers, and gunkholers of all kinds a very special place. Whether bird watchers, bicyclists, sailors, or fishers, they find that Dorchester offers a wealth of God's beautiful creation.
For those thimes that the big city lights beckon, the drive up US 50 is an easy one.
Just north across the river is Talbot County, a nice day trip's destination, whether
St. Michaels, Oxford, or Easton (the Diocesean seat). Annapolis, Maryland's historic
state capital is an hour away, and another 30 minutes brings you into either Washington
DC, or Baltimore. Driving east, the other way and in the same short time, you're lounging
in the sand in Ocean City along the Atlantic beaches.
